2011 Step into Life de Castella Run

2011 ~ WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Step into Life de Castella Run for Mental Health Research!!

This year’s event was a huge success. Over 1600 runners lined up at the start line and challenged themselves in the ElliptiGO 5k, Melbourne Running Company 10k or the Mizuno 15k events. It was a magnificent morning with the sun shining down on the course creating a striking setting around the Kew Boulevard. As runners struggled up the last gruelling hill back to Burke Hall, they came across the Lululemon cheer squad. Their words of encouragement helped draw out the last reserves of energy to get them through the final lap of the oval and across the finish line.

The event had some great options to assist with recovery. Some enjoyed a massage with a trained therapist while others took part in a yoga sessions thanks to White Space yoga. Once runners had cooled down, they could enjoy the festive atmosphere around Burke Hall. The DJ was pumping out some tunes and people were relaxing in the sun with a free sausage or restoring energy levels with an Aquaforce rehydration drink or Mocha Monkey coffee. The kids had a great time getting their face painted with the friendly clown and playing with the cute baby animals in the Petting Zoo.

Inside the hall the Mind and Body Expo was in full swing. Step into Life, Mizuno, Fly Active, Melbourne Running Company, Run 4 Your Life and ElliptiGO all had products on display with great staff on board. Run merchandise was also available for purchase so the memory of the day could last forever!  Great prizes were awarded to placegetters, medallions presented to age group and team event winners, and spot prizes were thrown into the crowds. Every runner was given a finishers showbag packed with giveaways and vouchers. There was something for everyone!

Mental illness was the most important focus of the day and the reason many took part in the event. It was a chance for those affected by mental illness and their families and friends to run for mental health research. The Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc) and Mind Australia had booths at the expo providing much needed advice and information about the mental illnesses and the new treatment approaches available. Metal illness is often neglected, but on Sunday everyone supported the cause and gave it the attention it deserves.

We raised a massive total of $35,500 for Mental Health Research!!

MAPrc is extremely grateful to everyone who participated in the event and raised funds for mental health research. Your support will directly contribute to developing new treatments and services for mental illness which will help improve the quality of life of those who suffer.
