Dr Gemma Sharp discusses mental health and reality TV on ABC News
On 15th May 2019, our NHMRC Early Career Fellow and Clinical Psychologist, Dr Gemma Sharp, was interviewed on the ABC News Tonight program regarding the potential negative health impacts on people appearing on reality television programs. These shows are becoming increasingly popular and, sadly, there have been several recent cases of people taking their own lives after appearing on these shows. Dr Gemma Sharp recommended that mental health professionals work closely with television producers when selecting people for their shows and provide crucial follow up support after the show’s completion. Dr Sharp’s research focuses on the effects of media on body image issues in particular, including body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders.
