The Brain Stimulation Lab at the Multidisciplinary Alfred Psychiatry research centre is host to cutting-edge research and clinical trials assessing the efficacy of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of a number of mental health conditions, including depression, anorexia nervosa and more.

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment using magnetic fields to stimulate electrical activity within the brain, with growing evidence suggesting its efficacy as a therapy for conditions such as depression, fibromyalgia, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Current Clinical Trials

Trial: COGENT

The COGENT study aims to determine whether D-Cycloserine (DCS), originally developed as an antibiotic and now being studied for its effects on brain function, can enhance the effects of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) in treating depression. By comparing two doses of DCS alongside iTBS, the study seeks to identify whether DCS can improve iTBS’s effectiveness in improving symptoms of treatment-resistant depression and to determine the optimal dosage of DCS for maximum benefit.
